NICKELBACK – HINDER – PAPA ROACH – SAVING ABEL
    Sat. August 1, 2009
    Walnut Creek

It was a Big Rock Show on a Saturday Night. Rock and Roll Adventures like this
are almost too easy to hit out of the park, putting us an easy one over the
    plate “Swing Batter!” –CRACK—

Anyone of these four bands on the bill could have been headlining which made the
tailgaters wrap up early and hit the Venue. You can stand beside your car anytime.

Do not be late, especially with the opener SAVING ABEL since they only get
30 minutes you need to make sure to be at the right place at the right time.

The recurring theme for the night from every band: THE HEAT. The Surface of the
Sun had moved to North Carolina and we added our own special brand of Southern
    humidity.

Every band wants your phone number, Saving Abel’s lead singer Jared Weeks held
up a guitar and gave a number for everyone to text to and “Someone here today,
will be the winner.” It was not me.

The last song of the swift set was: “ADDICTED”
“I’m so addicted to all the things you do”
It was a wild ride in the sauna.

PAPA ROACH was serving seconds and after seeing them yet again headline in
Greensboro this past winter I knew any band that would come after had their work
    cut out for them.

Lead Singer Jacoby Shaddix is a maniac, thirty seconds in and he was dripping from head-to-toe. Don’t get close to him because he was sending water everywhere even to the point of getting a mouthful from the water bottle and spewing it all over the drummer but he just shook it off and kept tearing through his equipment.

The Venue turned into a track meet as Jacoby sprinted out to the cheap(er) seats to
pump them up and his security tried as they could to keep up.

The bass from Tobin Esperance penetrated you completely like a ray from a medical device. I looked down at my draft beer and the top of it was rippling from the
concussion of those low notes so I did what I could to lower the level in the cup to
    keep spillage to a minimum.

Jacoby had his comments about the weather, “I wish it was about 10 degrees hotter
really”, (he was kidding), as they went into a new song with lyrics: “If sex is a drug what is the cure?”

Jacoby carried all the vocals, there were no other microphones at all on the stage,
which meant there was nothing to stick guitar pics on so not many were thrown out.

    “LAST RESORT” Lyrics
    Cut my life into pieces
    I’ve reached my last resort

    Cuz I’m losing my sight
    Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I’m fine
    Losing my sight
    Losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I’m fine

On the radio after the show and on the web some people were saying that “~Papa Roach ruled the night” and that is just an added plus to the total ticket package.

Sooner or later you have to stand in the many lines so that hindered me when HINDER brought their Rock Assault and this would be one of those moments where you have to go back and look at the camera to see how wild of a time you had.

Now it is time for the Headliner of the Headliners: NICKELBACK.

The poor load-in crew’s backs must be hurting because the stage is full of equipment. Huge diamond vision screen hung high and wide, two vertical stacks of lights running up each side, from the ceiling hung 8 space ship shaped moving fixtures packed with more lights than a battleship has guns and there were silver trumpet bell shaped tubes everywhere.

It was not long before these expanding tubes purpose became apparent: they were flame throwers which must have had their own tractor trailer of fuel because the crew member with the pyro button was a hyper pyromaniac.

On the hill there was a nice breeze blowing but in the pit the only wind was a massive whirlwind kicked up by the flames flying through the air. Mission Accomplished: we reached that extra 10 degrees. (Is my beer bubbling now?)

And why be the odd band out, Lead Singer Chad Kroeger talked about the heat. “We need some water hoses like Ozzy has, somebody write that down, we’ll add those for next time”. “We’re in the heat now but you have been doing it all day long.” It is nice that the Rock Star knows what world we live in.

The band passed water out to the crowd, threw out shots in red cups and even pulled out the Patron tequila and was pouring it in the mouth of a girl on the barricade but it ended up going all over her. That girl had better be very careful next time the flames shoot off or she might become a part of the flaming spectacle, get the cameras ready.

One big guy was jumping up and down so much and so long that Chad asked, “What are you on Dude? I know it’s not a pogo stick”.

People commented on how much back-and-forth he did with the crowd saying it was too much since some of the songs they wanted to hear did not get played but as “they” say: Leave them wanting more.

Returning to the intimate club where they were discovered 10 years earlier, Papa Roach blew the roof of the world famous Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA. Previewing new songs from their most recent record Metamorphisis, and playing classic songs such as "Last Resort" & "Scars" the band gave an action packed set. Seen Papa Roach open for Buckcherry last night at the Sound Academy and let me say this is my 3rd time seeing Papa Roach and they rocked it hard.Pure high energy performance by lead singer Jacoby Shaddix and his awesome hair.lol.They don't miss a beat with the new drummer he bought the house down.In my eyes i think Papa Roach blew Buckcherry out the water last night. The crowd was more into Papa Roach then they were for Buckcherry.Don't get me wrong i have mad respect for Buckcherry but Papa buried then last night. Can't wait for a Papa Roach headlining tour so we can hear all there great music from all 5 albums. As for the Sound Academy venue,it's one of the best i've been to.Go see a show there trust me you will like it.Papa Roach Papa Roach Papa Roach Papa Roach Papa Roach Papa Roach.
