The English Beat is a New Wave band. They say it is Ska but they are a pop band that occasionally plays ska/reggae. Yes, they 'are' good. But if you want ska go see Hepcat!!!

Why does Dave fire guitar players left and right? As soon as you see them with someone that knows the parts, they're gone. I saw them with one guy (A SF Bay Area musician) that I've seen with The Easy Star All-Stars, The Itals and that 80's reggae group Foundation. Didn't catch his name but a guy that smiles a lot and talks to people after a show. That guy played the songs close to the original recordings, not too loud, just made the band sound full, ya know? Then I see them again without a second guitar player, then I see them with someone who sounded like he didn't even own any English Beat albums. It's like, "What the @#*^???"

Saw them at the Cats Cradle and it was the all-around most enjoyable concert I've been to since JJ Cale in Athens, GA in 2001. Saw them one other time in 1982 in Athens, GA. I got a cool T-Shirt and Dave shook my hand and remembered the Athens gig when I mentioned it. Will go see them every chance I get in the future.

Too bad you left before the end of the gig. I caught them in Boston and Providence this week and they sounded tight and looked like they were having fun on stage and the audience was going crazy for them in both places so it was a fun night for all concerned. I'm with the guy who says you go to live gigs to hear the songs played with LIVE ENERGY and I have to say all the guys were putting in their best efforts when I saw them. Most musicians will tell you they feed off the energy of the audience as the show goes on but I've seen these guys putting out great vibes even when the room isn't rockin' along with them. Or a sold out crowd either.Did you happen to notice if the other fans in the audience were having a good time or not?

I can understand if you hadn't seen The BEAT in a long time and didn't know what to expect from 'the new guys' (not that they're all that new to the business or the band) but I think an act like this is definitely worth the price of admission and Dave goes out of his way to make sure as many people as possible enjoy the show. All the guys care about putting in a great performance and they're all great guys besides. I only remember GP and EB songs from the radio so I'm just glad to hear them again LIVE. I didn't own alot of their records 'back in the day' but I'm very glad I've been able to meet Dave and Rhythm and Wayne and Anthony over the past few years of seeing them live and let them know how great it is to share a good time with them at a show.

Maybe if you go to a show with the intent of having a good time and just enjoying the music you'll enjoy yourself more at your next English Beat show.
