Artist: The Music of ABBA (Arrival From Sweden)
    Date of Concert: 11/14/2009
    Location: Dayton, Ohio, USA

Arrival put on a terrific show. The vocals and song selection were what any ABBA fan could hope for. The combination of Arrival and the Dayton Philharmonic gave extra punch and class to the performance. The lead guitar mix could have been louder. All the members of Arrival made you feel ABBA was right there on stage. It was a complete package with backup singers, sax player, percussionist and extra keyboards. The Mead Theatre in Dayton's Schuster Center is a superb venue, as well as an architectural masterpiece. If you loved Mama Mia or the Seventies were your prime years, you should see this show.

DENVER — Continuing in their efforts to combine tradition with cutting edge new music, Swallow Hill Music is pleased to announce Judy Collins and Neko Case headlining the fourth annual RootsFest with Paper Bird and Trace Bundy at the renowned Ellie Caulkins Opera House on Saturday, March 6, 2010 in Denver, CO.

Few artists have displayed the staying power folk icon Judy Collins. For nearly 45 years her dulcet tones have graced our ears, and her poetic lyrics have galvanized a generation. She has released more than 40 albums to critical acclaim, accomplished gold and platinum record sales, and has had numerous Top 10 hits including her rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and her Grammy Award-winning version of the Broadway hit "Send in the Clowns." Now, with her confirmed performance at the 2010 RootsFest in Denver, Collins gets back to some roots of her own as she returns to the town that spawned her illustrious career.

Singer-songwriter Neko Case’s latest album, 2009's Middle Cyclone, debuted number 3 on the Billboard Top 200 and was called "one of the most original, beguiling, honest records of the year" by Interview magazine. Also known for her work with Canadian indie-rockers The New Pornographers she has been called "indie's greatest singer" by Rolling Stone and “a force of nature" by The New York Times magazine.

Local favorites Paper Bird will showcase this year's festival. Voted one of the "Best Underground Bands of 2008" by the Denver Post, the band's unique instrumentation allows them to merge diverse influences into one solid sound. Their backbone is their songwriting, musicianship and a general allergy to all limitations and trends, keeping them firm in an uncategorized genre (a fact that the band prides itself on). Since their inception, Paper Bird continues to turn heads and gain attention in Denver as one of the hottest emerging acts in the city.

Also performing this year is instrumental-virtuoso Trace Bundy, whose unique guitar playing and effects-looping would lead you to believe he has a band hidden backstage. Named Acoustic Guitar magazine's 2008 "Most Promising New Player of the Year," Bundy brings a performance worthy of every crowds "wow," with renditions of classic songs in a finger-picking style that is the stuff internet viral-videos are made of.

Previous RootsFest artists include Taj Mahal, Nancy Griffith, Rickie Lee Jones, Bruce Cockburn, Hot Rize, Tallest Man on Earth, Joe Pug, Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, and Boulder Acoustic Society.

General public ticket sales begin Thursday, December 3 at 10 a.m. online at www.swallowhillmusic.org (now with no processing fees), by calling (303) 777-1003 x2, or by visiting our Box Office at 71 E. Yale Ave, Denver, CO, 80210.

    Location: San Jacinto, Ca

What artist is worthy enough to sing for royalty and 5 U.S. presidents? I found out one magical night in San Jacinto. Vikki Carr is all entertainer. She can make you cry with her powerful rich voice. She can also make you laugh with her rye sense of humor. When she sings you know she feels it in her soul. She has such a love for her sold-out audience. Vikki Carr also knows who loves her and she gives them everything she has and then some. No doubt, she'll be a sell-out in Temecula at the Pechanga Resort on December 11, 2009. If you haven't already guessed, I'll be there! (From Kentucky) By the way, her biggest ovation came when she mentioned her latest grammy win in 2008, her 4th.

    Artist: Hanggai
    Date of Concert: 11/13/2009
    Location: Beijing, PRC

If there’s ever been a reason to learn Mongolian, it’s the psychedelic punk folk rock of the band Hangai. Founded by a notorious Beijing punk rocker in search of his Mongolian roots, the band consists of the usual drums, bass, and guitar. Its singularity however, belongs in the incorporation of the taobuxuur, a Mongolian two-stringed lute, and a morin-khuur, or horse head fiddle. These instruments, while all so distinctive sounding, manage to seamlessly find their way into tight rhythms that at once make you want to hit the dance floor, ride a horse through the vast steppes of Central Asia, contemplate man’s relationship with nature, or just stare at this five-piece band in awe. And, just when you thought the band couldn’t sound any more anomalous they bust out the throat singing.

Next to the yurt and meaty cuts of mutton, throat singing has got to be my favorite Mongolian contribution to the world. While Xu Jingchen, the band’s founder and guitarist, sings about his Mongolian homeland, he is backed by Ilchi and Hugejiltu two of the most exceptional throat singers I have ever heard. If I were a talented writer this is the part when I would explain exactly what throat singing sounds like. Instead, I will refer you to the band’s myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/hanggaiband.

When this band comes to your town, see them and bring your friends and family.

A Concert Under the Stars with Number ONE STAR--MISS VIKKI CARR!
On October 1, 2005 the University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) in Edinburg, TX held their Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Community Day from 4-10pm, free and open to the public. Exhibits including a prototype of the Mars Pathfinder land rover were way cool and a big hit with kids and adults alike.
But they saved the BEST for last: VIKKI CARR! Taking the stage at 9pm, Vikki gave a spectacular closing concert. I just had to go! But there were challenges: my 88 year old mother who was very ill, an hour and a half drive ( I live in Brownsville, TX), an outdoor concert in the Texas heat and humidity and no seating. What to do? Well, when the going gets tough, the tough get going! Where there's a will, there's a way! Vikki's fan club president, Vito to ensure my mother's comfort, worked his magic and got someone from the university to meet us on our arrival. But, of course, we took a wrong turn upon entering Edinburg and got lost! I finally had to give in and call my contact person, Gabi (our guardian angel) and she was incredible. She gave us directions-and we still bungled it -and had to call her again. She asked if I could see Pizza Hut - I said yes - and she said, "Stay there, I'm coming for you." She arrived and escorted us to the university and found us a parking space. Actually, I think she gave us her own. I put my mother in a wheelchair and then it was full steam ahead-all systems go! "Excuse me! Wheelchair coming through!" helped part the crowds like the Red Sea! And boy, was it crowded-organizers said 30,000 people attended. Gabi got us up to the stage under moon and stars, to the FRONT ROW! There were two rows of seats-for staff only- and fenced in. Everyone else had to stand. Gabi got us through the throngs of fans and through the fence to our front row seats marked, "VIKKI CARR RESERVED." We were in heaven! We sat down and watched an all-female mariachi group, Mariachi Femenil, and enjoyed their performance. Then I saw Mari Falcone start setting up and my heart began racing! By the way, I have a message for Mari, "You go, girl" You were really rocking Saturday night!" Then Vikki was announced, the music started, and on comes Vikki in all her glory! She started with Love Song from Live at the Greek and it was awesome! The arrangements were incredible and the band really rocked! Vikki was in top form. She looked and sounded great. She sang six songs in spanish and 11 in english. Someone shout out, "Ni Princesa Ni Esclava" and Vikki sang it acappella! And flawlessly! Some songs Vikki sang in her 90 minute non-stop concert were Bye Bye Blackbird, Spanish Harlem, A Song for You and America the Beautiful (which put a lump in my throat!" Vikki said she was going on the road again and that we were her first audience. She said she could feel the love we were giving and that it told her she was on the right track. The audience was wonderful. They were kids, teenagers, college students, adults and senior citizens and they knew all her songs. They were singing along with her and they clearly loved her. I felt honored and privileged to be with them. The concert was to be 60 minutes but Vikki went on for 90 minutes. Her adoring fans didn't want to let her go! And who can blame them? The concert was very upbeat and had my left foot tapping throughout the show. Vikki sang, she danced, she chatted with us-it was a night to remember! When the concert was over, Gabi escorted us to Vikki's limo. A big, burly guy was guarding it. I asked if Vikki was in there. He said, "She is, and you're not getting near her." Well, I'm Italian on my mother's side and that was the wrong thing to say to me. I went around him, waved to Vikki through the tinted windows, and guess what? Vikki lowered the window! She said, "Hi!" When I told her I was there with my mother, she said, "Where is she?" I said, "Over there, in the wheelchair" and she said, "Oh, bring the wheelchair over here. I'm sorry that I don't get out but my feet are killing me." She then craned her head out the window and said to my mother, "Hi, how did you like the show?" When I told Vikki that my mother is usually in bed by 9pm, she said, "Oh, I kept you up pretty late, I hope you liked the show." Indeed, she did! It was truly a magical evening for us and we are very grateful to Vito and Gabi who went out of their way to make this happen and make us feel so special.
Las, but certainly not least, thank you Vikki, for lowering your window and being so gracious to us. This turned out to be Mother's last concert as she passed away eight months later. Your kindness to us will not be forgotten, Vikki.

We last saw Bruce in Kansas City about 20 years ago with the Range. I'm disappointed in not having had opportunities to see him in concert between then and now but, oh my, what a wonderful time we had watching and listening to him and the Noisemakers last night. It's impossible to not have a good time when the performers appear to also be having a good time. Bruce played for 2 hours but we could have listened for another 2 hours. If we had the where-with-all, we'd travel to Colorado and/or California to catch another show or 2. Thanks, Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, for a wonderful time.

Ms. Carr captivated her audience with her charm, humor, and a voice that is so powerful it will make your heart skip a beat. You can feel the passion and emotion that oozes from this legendary performer that will surely make you shed a tear!

Picture it!! Steven's Steak House, a hot night club just outside L.A. The food is great....the club is packed to the rafters, and there is electricity in the air. The music begins, my stomache starts to tighten, then..from the back of this over packed house appears a tiny figure inching her way thru the crowd and out of her body is flowing the sounds of angles. This is Vikki Carr my friends. Never before, or after, have I heard such a voice, i mean I've heard her recordings and seen her on TV, but nothing prepared me for such a glorious evening. You Gotta see for yourself!!

Before there was Los Lobos, before there was Gloria Estefan, there was Vikki Carr - the first true Latin/Pop crossover singer. Carr has recorded 60 best-selling records over the past 40 years, including 17 Gold albums. Now, the three-time Grammy award-winner returns to the Pechanga Resort & Casino on December 11, 2009 for a very special holiday concert. Expect this show to sell-out since this is one night only.

New venue in Dallas, Styx was the first rock show at the Allen Events Center, ironically they were the first rock show at Nextstage (now Nokia) in Grand Prairie , TX, 2/26/02. Great show, Night Ranger opened, Tommy Shaw came out and sang "High Enough" with Jack Blades (Damn Yankees). Styx sounded great and amazing multimedia backdrop. Chuck Panazzo played with 4 songs. REO Speedwagon was good, poor sound quality, a lot of bass and way too much drum mix. Kevin Cronin sounded excellent, a little to preachy between songs. All three seemed to appreciate each others music, different members watching each group perform on the side. Can wait 'til next time.
